Do kitchen cabinets go in before flooring. Please note that this assumes that you are doing a full remodel in the kitchen both replacing the cabinets and the flooring at the same time. The flooring contractor will not have to work around existing cabinetry so the work can go that much faster. May i ask what would be the better option to lay wooden or tiled floors before or after kitchen units are fitted.

As you can see above there are pros and cons to installing the flooring before or after but there seems to be less risks by doing the cabinets first. If installing a floating floor the answer is simple. There are a couple quality items to consider when installing the cabinets before flooring. If you are going to put in a hardwood floor and it is a total of 1 1 2 and you want 4 toe kick then the kick should be 5 1 2 tall and the cabinets should be 37 1 2 tall from the concrete.

All you have to do is pull the kick off remove the old floor covering install the new flooring then put the kick back. I can see the logic to this lets say a tile is broken an. If they want to change flooring at a later date you don t have to remove the cabinets.

Floor fitter suggested after installation as if tiles wooden floors are being changed then you don t have to remove the units. Put all the base cabinets in place then mark a line on the subfloor corresponding to the front edge of the toekick. Generally it is much better to install the hardwood floors before the kitchen cabinets.

But if you have to install the flooring first here s a method that will avoid some of the problems i just described. There is one exception to this rule see below. Installing the floors before the cabinets has some advantages.

In most cases given standard flooring heights you can install the cabinets before the floor covering. Shim up base cabinets keeping in mind the underlayment and flooring thickness the base cabinets should be raised up to accommodate the thickness after installation of the floor. Otherwise the cabinet toe kicks and countertop will be short.

Install the cabinets first because heavy cabinetry cannot sit on top of a floating floor or it will restrict movement and increase the chances of flooring separation. The floor covering will be cut to size and almost butted against the cabinets. Accommodate for the flooring thickness in your toekicks.

However when installing a wood flooring nail down or glue down there are more factors to consider. Those are all good reasons to lay a kitchen floor after the cabinets are in. Cabinets are installed after the finished floor.
